AMBAJI: The Rajasthan police made unprecedented security arrangements for Chief Minister Narendra Modi, as he landed at the Abu Road helipad to launch the fourth leg of his Gaurav Yatra.
Some 2,000 policemen were posted along the 25-km stretch from the helipad to the Gujarat border, to ensure that Modi had a safe exit from the state and towards Ambaji, from where he started the yatra.
With an increasing number of plots to assassinate Modi being unearthed in recent times, an IGP and his deputy led the security men. Task force personnel were also deployed to meet with any eventuality.
Once at Ambaji, he steered clear of controversial remarks about the minorities and stuck to his usual Musharraf and Congress bashing.
Speaking about the threat to his life and taking a dig at the Congress at the same time, he said that he was surprised to find the language of the letters found on the terrorists, who attacked the Akshardham temple, and the language used by the Congress to attack him, was almost the same.
Modi has been drawing parallels between the Congress and Musharraf ever since the Pakistani president criticised the government for the communal riots. "The statements made by Congress leaders are even shown on Pakistan TV," he said.
"The party has conspired to harm the interests of Gujarat. It now has to decide where it wants to take the state," he added.
Union minister Uma Bharati, who also spoke on the occasion, preferred to target the new GPCC chief Shankersinh Vaghela. "Vaghela was asking whether the two terrorists killed at Akshardham were Muslims," she said, adding, "I have to ask Sonia Gandhi whether her man in Gujarat is communal?"
Later in the day at Khedbrahma, Modi tried to build a rapport with the crowd. Speaking from his mechanised rath, he said, "Je daj tamara dil mache, a daj mara dil ma pun chhe, je dhank tamne lagyo che, a dhank mane pun lagyo chhe (I also feel the anger that you feel, the sting that hurts you, hurts me too).
"Gujarat’s image has been tarnished by power-hungry politicians," he said and added, "They have created an impression that Gujaratis always carry kerosene bottles and knifes and are baying for anybody’s blood."
He spoke about the Akshardham attack and said that power-hungry elements had told the public that this holy site was attacked because he had been critical of Musharraf.
Modi also compared the Akshardham attack with attacks on Hazratbal and Charar-e-Sharif in Kashmir. He said that in Hazrat Bal, the government used to send five star food to the terrorists and in the end, let them escape.
"But this time round, they were killed. This was because of the stand taken by the BJP against terrorism," he said.
